Literate Lamanchas began with a pet Lamancha named Rosinante (Don Quixote, anyone?). From this, Jocelyn decided that she wanted to show goats, so she began a search for better goats. We have three separate herds--Literate Lamanchas belongs to Jocelyn, Featherbrained Farm is Pam's Lamancha and Saanen herd, and Tuva Acres is our French Alpine herd, belonging to Shawn. The main emphasis of our combined herd is on milk production, with a little showing thrown in for good measure.
In 2013, we entered our first shows (other than fair), had our first linear appraisal, and began milk testing through DHIR. We are constantly striving to improve our herd, with an emphasis on milk production. All four does on milk test in 2013 received their AR stars, three of them being first fresheners. Our only 2014 first freshener earned enough to get her star, and also received her SG (Superior Genetics) designation in December 2014, a first for our herd and a goat of our own breeding. In 2017, 2 more does received their SG designation--SG Olentangy Stingray Hestia and SG Featherbrained MaryAnn's Belle--another of our homebred does, out of one of Jocelyn's original does. Our does have consistently (and easily) earned their milk stars as first fresheners. Several have qualified for production awards through ADGA and the breed clubs, and one of our does, SG Olentangy Stingray Hestia, made the 2017 Elite Doe list, in the 99th percentile. In 2019, one of Jocelyn's home-bred does, for several generations, made the Elite list--SG Literate Lamanchas Tiger Lily (aka Princess). All of our bucks are *B bucks (the older ones are +B as well) and are DNA typed and casein tested. We have several does that are milking through and still holding strong. LA scores continue to improve every round of appraisal. We now have several does with championship legs, despite limited showing. Shawn and Jocelyn attended ADGA Nationals in 2019, in Redmond, OR, with one of Shawn's home-bred does, Tuva Acres ZA Gallette, placing 7th place Sr. Dry Yearling Alpine (out of a class of 23). In 2023, we had our first doe appraise EEEE90 (Featherbrained Serendipity, my granddaughter of Kickapoo-Valley Colorme Dharma and Fir Meadow DNL Falke).
We pull our kids immediately at birth and bottle feed on heat-treated colostrum and pasteurized milk. We feed either from bottles or a multi-kid bucket that we hold for the babies--we don't just throw it out for them and leave it. Our kids are hand-raised and played with from birth, and they are all friendly and easy to handle. In fact, it's difficult to avoid tripping over them, and there are always upturned noses waiting for kisses.
